American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays caused by weather and additional factors.

More than three thousand US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, can I secure another source of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the closure started.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy stated.

On that day, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Airport, though, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second-busiest airfield in the country, could encounter problems from low staffing in the afternoon.

The agency advised travelers in the state to consult airlines about revised flight schedules.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to travel by air in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in 2019. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led several air traffic controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the government shutdown after 35 days.
