American Brokers Ukraine Negotiations in Abu Dhabi as Trump Administration Pushes for Conflict Resolution

High-level talks with US, Moscow, and Ukrainian representatives commenced in the United Arab Emirates this week, representing the most recent step in efforts to forge a resolution to end the continuing hostilities in the region.

High-Level Participants and Opening Discussions

American military official the US representative apparently held talks with a Russian delegation on Monday night, with negotiations continuing into Tuesday.

“The talks are going well and we remain optimistic. He is working in tight alignment with Washington as discussions unfold,” an official representative commented.

Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, the head of military intelligence, was scheduled to join in the meetings, though it remained unclear whether direct talks with Russian representatives would happen or if distinct one-on-one sessions would be held.

The composition of the Russian group was uncertain. “I have nothing to say. Media accounts are being tracked,” a Kremlin representative told official outlets.

Context and Revised Proposal

These talks follow recent negotiations in Switzerland where American and Kyiv officials revised a draft US framework for resolving the conflict.

Moscow has not yet approved the latest iteration of the plan and is not expected to accept many of the Kyiv revisions.

Moscow’s top diplomat, the Russian diplomat, stated that any modified agreement must embody the “spirit and letter” of what was covered during earlier summit meetings between both nations.

International Reactions and Apprehensions

European leaders are reportedly finding it difficult to stay engaged in the process as US officials take the lead.

The Finnish president, Alexander Stubb, who has stepped forward as a key contact between the US and EU officials, commented that the coming days would be decisive in efforts to secure a peace settlement.

He reportedly held discussions with Kyiv’s leader and the alliance officials, stating that “Ukraine’s destiny must be determined by Ukrainians, and European security is for Europe to decide.”

Meanwhile, the French leader, the French official, warned against a settlement that would represent a “surrender” for Ukraine.

“What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable for the Russians. Does that mean that it is what must be accepted by the Ukrainians and the Europeans? The answer is no,” he declared.

Details of the Original American Plan

The US plan was reportedly composed of 28 points and was based on discussions between US and Moscow representatives, with input from Ukrainian security authorities.

Major aspects of the plan reportedly involved:

  • The nation ceding territory currently occupied by Moscow
  • Further zones that might be expected to be voluntarily surrendered
  • Limits on the size of the Ukrainian army
  • Immunity for all parties in the conflict regarding violations

Recent Events and Continuing Difficulties

American representative reportedly traveled to Kyiv to inform the Ukrainian president on the plan and demand rapid acceptance.

This demand, combined with the disclosure of the proposal, apparently took by surprise Kyiv and EU authorities.

Zelenskyy reportedly that the country was facing one of the toughest moments in its history and was being forced to decide between “forfeiting self-respect or abandoning a crucial supporter.”

Later, Driscoll briefed alliance ambassadors on the proposal in Kyiv, with one participant describing it as “a nightmare meeting” and noting that European officials were shocked by both the substance and manner of the presentation.

Washington later softened its stance, stating that the 28-point proposal was an “initial basis for negotiation” rather than a final demand.

Military Developments Amid Talks

While diplomatic efforts proceed, Russian forces has continued its nightly assaults on Ukraine’s cities.

Russian forces reportedly launched numerous of missiles and many of unmanned aircraft at objectives in and around Kyiv, according to Kyiv sources.

Zelenskyy emphasized that the Kremlin must not feel it could win the conflict while talks were ongoing.

“Crucially, all allies must advance toward diplomacy collectively, with unified action. Sanctions and pressure on Moscow must yield outcomes,” he affirmed.

The capital’s leader confirmed that seven people had been killed in the recent assault on the city.
