Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, the game developers launched a fresh playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the regular Breakthrough format but features several notable adjustments:

  • Each team includes only 8 human participants, with the rest made up of AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities done by real players grant complete experience points, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
  • Just a pair of locations can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
  • Features like Player tags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.

So essentially, the playlist delivers on its title: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it provides more options for players seeking different ways to enjoy the title. But, gaming history has shown one thing, it's that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 players are upset.

Community Reactions: Anger to Support

"Gamers prefer real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your rivals," states one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," comments a different user. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this title," while another lists everything they believe to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."

On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this title 24/7. Let them find a middle ground," states another. A response via social media explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," while another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Valid Criticisms and Player Input

Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase queue times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of playlists in the game already. On a similar note, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, despite it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.

Finally, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to offer complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they attempted to remove XP farming from the mode. Thus this new playlist feels like the community compromising halfway, as per a Reddit comment. Another describes this mode as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Be Made?

Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Tasks being too difficult were adjusted very quickly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to change it again.
