Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, stating he now intends to appear with Cuomo in communities where he maintains strong support.
“It is crucial to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how critical this election is,” Adams stated.
He added, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has attracted attention worldwide and represented aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democratic party.
During a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
