Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the images originated was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
