Nutrition Assistance Set to Expire for Tens of Millions During Continuing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities announced this past weekend that SNAP funds through a critical national welfare initiatives are not going out in November amid the persistent federal government shutdown.

Closure Continues Into 25th Day

The federal closure had reached nearly a month as officials revealed the news, in response to calls from over 200 House Democrats asking the USDA to utilize contingency funds to pay for next month's benefits.

“Bottom line, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “At this time, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.

National Consequences

Over 40 million Americans count on these food benefits, according to federal data. Various areas, like New Mexico, reliance on the program is as high as a significant portion of citizens.

Documents reviewed by Reuters indicated that the department chose not to tap emergency reserves for November food benefits.

Legislative Deadlock

Congressional leaders remain deadlocked about the way to support and resume the federal government.

Comments by the director at a budget research center noted that federal leadership had opportunities to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.

“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps weeks ago to be prepared to access these resources,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to support legislation that would resume government operations.

Emergency Measures

Governors in multiple regions declared states of emergency this week to allocate funds for hunger relief expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
