The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
