During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress constructed from the past of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to witness again a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the secret to his downfall once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a vessel into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is understood of his research, the case almost certainly contained some of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
