The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
