The Reze Arc Movie Tops American Cinema Earnings in Opening Weekend

Has Sony done it again? Coming after the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned more than $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the hundred-million-dollar threshold worldwide, attaining a global total of $108M in its opening frame. The film surpassed the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Strong U.S. and Worldwide Earnings

Helmed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It earned over $18 million in the U.S. after a strong $5.2 million Saturday earnings and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday take. Globally, the produced by MAPPA film added nearly $15 million across 46 global regions, bringing its global earnings to $60.4 million via Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Official totals are still pending from Sony its official box office total.

Parallels to Past Anime Hits

Anime marketing agency a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, contrasting the feature's anticipated earnings to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34M in the domestic market in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical $18 million domestically. This movie's opening frame aligns with that standard, while its $108 million global gross currently tracks slightly below the earlier film's $166.6 million final run. Even if it doesn't seem possible Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will match the box office of blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the distributor.

Promotional Efforts Fuel Performance

Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have successfully utilized community involvement to drive their supremacy at the anime box office. The movie's marketing campaign began at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in the month of July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, and later included a significant involvement at New York Comic Con showcasing never-before-seen content, lotteries for fans, and more MAPPA sessions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and influencers alike after the last day of the convention.

Looking Ahead

This year marks a major time for animated films, and for the studio, which has an additional animated movie debuting this year in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
